Let's Just Call The Season Over?
June 23rd 2008 11:32
Having watched Geelongs stunning dismemberment of the Weagles over a few beers at the local last Saturday, I find it hard to recall a more dominant footballing performance. It was literally awe inspiring. Everyone at the bar was transfixed, eyes glued to the screen not wanting to miss a second. Jaws touched the floor every time Jr touched the ball. Can I be so bold and ask, does anyone else have a problem if we just declare the season over now and hand them the cup again?
Certainlly Chocko doesn't. He thinks Port are done for the season and he's the coach so he should know. "It all over people, we don't have a prayer" I believe was Mark Williams anguished cry as he ran from the after game press conference sobbing uncontrolably (or so I'm led to believe, I didn't actually see it, and you know what these chinese whispers can be like).
Apparently they're going to throw in the white towel and maybe consider turning up next season if they think they have a chance. Maybe i'm mistaken (as is frequently the case) but don't Port claim to be a "traditional" football club? Giving up on a season when it's only half way through doesn't sound like any footballing tradition I have ever heard of. What happened playing it out to the final siren?
For all you Port fans here is the final ladder for 2008:
1. Geelong
2. The guys on Geelongs list that can't get a game
3. Daylight
4. Footsgray
5. Sydney
6. Hawthorne
7. Brisbane
8. Collingwood
9. North Melbourne
10. Adelaide
11. Richmond
12. Carlton
13. St. Kilda
14. Essendon
15. Fremantle
16. West Coast
17. Melbourne
DNF. Port Adelaide
