Guilty pleasure
April 5th 2010 12:35
The lamentation of choice for the footy "traditionalist" over the past two decades has been "there turning it into netball." Well if Essendon ran back in defense half as hard as the Vixens just did in their victory over the Fever, the Bombers might stand a chance in 2010. Maybe Knighter should get Corletto and Chatfield down to Windy Hill to show them how it's done.
This may seem flippant, and perhaps it is, but the only disrespect I mean is to the Bombers. As an Essendon supporter, I'm sick of this "rebuilding" excuse. Surly the job of the coach is to put in place strategies to win games - whatever stage of "development" the team is at.
It's all well and good to want to play attractive, attacking football but the reality is that all the sides that have won premierships over the last decade have been built around their defense. Knights needs to seriously look at the direction he has set, with the Bombers well in need of a defensive emphasis to stem the ridiculously easy goals they gift to their opponents. It's just so frustrating to watch their one dimensional game plan when it goes wrong.
Maybe that's enough of the negative stuff. Now for something positive. I have to admit that one of my guilty pleasures over the last year or two has been sneaking the odd look at the netball on One. It's a great little package that they have put together and should be the envy of many struggling Australian sports (basketball I'm looking at you). Go Vixens. As for the Bombers Grrrrr!
