Bombers Bummer

April 26th 2010 01:01
Ok, so I haven't posted anything in over a week. I was trying to let the pent up rage subside after the Bombers effort (or lack their of) against the Eagles. For some unknown reason I tipped them in that game and, not having learned my lesson, I tipped them again on ANZAC day. How stupid am I? Just shows to go you what loyalty brings you these days.

To add insult to injury, now I hear Tayte Pears is going to miss six to eight weeks with an arm injury. The only advise you could give young Tayte is don't hurry back. There's not a lot of point rushing your recovery. No one at the bombers are going anywhere except for maybe the coach - straight back to Richmond where his game plan belongs.

I am hesitant to sink to boots into a coach when he's down. A coach is only as good as the players he has on the park, but in this case I think Knights is reaping what he has sown.

Sure Lloyd and Lucas were past their prime but they would have certainly got a game in the Bombers sides that have hit the park in he last two weeks. I'd be naive to suggest they would have won with these two veterans, their problems run a lot deeper that that, but their being railroaded out at the end of last year highlight the inept selection choices being made at Windy Hill at the moment.

It's all very well to wave the "rebuilding" white flag but young sides need leadership. They need people around that have won games and premierships. They need people that they can rally around, who are willing to do what it takes to lift their side when they are flat - great captains bump on Sewell, Lloydy. Ask the young players from the '93 Bombers premiership side how much of a thrill they got out of playing alongside Tim Watson.

As promising as Gumbleton, Neagle, Melksham, Colyer, and to a lesser extent Hurley and Pears are, they are not ready for senior footy. They have all shown some signs and will all hopefully go on to be good, if not great AFL players, but they should all still be playing the majority of their football in the VFL at this stage of their careers.

They need to develop the confidence that playing against other players at their own level can bring. What they don't need to be smashed every week by seasoned AFL players. It's one thing to give them an opportunity but that opportunity has to be given to them when they are ready and equipped to take it.

Well, I think that's enough of a rant about the Bombers. I won't even mention their ridiculous game plan. It's just so frustrating considering last years performance - which wasn't great but at least their was some bright spots. Would Essendon have won more games by retaining their veterans? Maybe. Maybe not but at least it would have given some of their younger players time to learn the game without the pressure that the spotlight of center stage brings.

Season 2010 is definitely over for the Bombers. I'll try not to mention them again.

Match of the round = StK v Freo???

April 15th 2010 11:33
So what would you have said at the start of the season, hell even 5 days ago, if someone had sidled up to you a bar and said "Freo V's Saint Kilda. That'll be a good game?"

If you're anything like me you probably would have avoided eye contact and ordered two of whatever he was drinking, but that's exactly the situation we're faced with this week. Strange days indeed.

There's so many factor to be considered in this game. Personally, I feel Freo will drop away at the end of the year when the kids that have been standing up for them start to tire, but the season is still young and they'll be up after knocking off the Cats. It is at Docklands, but they've already beaten the Bombers there this season.

To be honest none of us would even be considering an upset if St. Nick was playing but where are the Saints going to get their goals? Can they keep the Dockers to under 68 points (their score minus Nick's point last week)? Milney? But only if they don't call him names. They did well against the soft bellied Pies but will a switched on team be so easy to suppress? The Dockers have manage 118, 113 and 125 in their last three matches. Everything is set up for an upset.

Sports bet are offering $3.45 for Fremantle and the only thing stopping me taking the bet is an age old mantra that has served me well over the years "never bet on Fremantle, Ommmmm."

Poor Milney.

It's rough being called a "f------ rapist" by a "grey-haired old c---" and a "f------ homo." Why such hurtful sledges Collingwood? It's just not Cricket.

I am constantly reminded that there is no sarcasm font when typing so, to clarify, I'm siding with Collingwood on this one (I feel a little dirty).

Growing up, one of the golden rules in the playground was, if you dish it out, you should be prepared to cop it. Milne should know this. He would have been in the school system (I presume) before all the kids were wrapped in cotton wool to protect the precious little darlings from the big bad bullies. (I contend a certain amount of bullying is good for kids - but that's besides the point).

You can argue that Mick should be old enough to know better but on the flip side he's also old enough to know better. His teams down at half time. They've kicked one goal four and are looking for a spark. Milne jogs past and opens his big mouth. I say Mick was well within his rights to give him a spray.

In the "New Age" football environment Mick will be derided as unprofessional but sometimes a coach needs to try something. It was a gamble, that ultimately didn't work as the Pies didn't win, but they did work back into the game in the second proving that it still doesn't hurt to give the players a bit of a rev up now and then. Mick will have to pay the fine but sometimes rolling the dice works. Just ask Sheedy.

As for Milne, Boohoo. Go cry to someone who cares.

I have long since given up making new year's resolutions. There's little point going through the self loathing that comes with breaking a promise that you were never going to keep in the first place. I'd like to think that I'm a man that knows his weaknesses and plays to his strengths - and self restraint is not something I do well.

So what's with the self philosophy? Well, if I had made a new years resolution, It would have been "no Supercoach in 2010

Guilty pleasure

April 5th 2010 12:35
The lamentation of choice for the footy "traditionalist" over the past two decades has been "there turning it into netball." Well if Essendon ran back in defense half as hard as the Vixens just did in their victory over the Fever, the Bombers might stand a chance in 2010. Maybe Knighter should get Corletto and Chatfield down to Windy Hill to show them how it's done.

This may seem flippant, and perhaps it is, but the only disrespect I mean is to the Bombers. As an Essendon supporter, I'm sick of this "rebuilding" excuse. Surly the job of the coach is to put in place strategies to win games - whatever stage of "development" the team is at

Who cares what Eddie thinks?

April 4th 2010 00:54
For those who haven't heard, the Bombers are renaming the Coventry end at Docklands the "Lloyde" end.... and why not? Eddie may not like it but the fact is no other player has kicked more goals at the ground (I know Riewoldt is catching up fast but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it).

Coventry may be a legend, you can take nothing away from him, but how many goals at Docklands? I don't need to google him to find the answer. Lloyde is a player of relevance to the ground and fully deserves his name on that stand

It Begins (2010)

March 26th 2010 00:01
2010. Football. The people game..... sorry that's Star Trek isn't it? Arthur C. Clarke would never write such poorly punctuated rubbish.

I watched last nights (Thursday) season opener for the same reason that I assume most watched the game. That is because it was footy and it was on the telly. A five month absence made the heart fond enough to even sit through a 60 odd point Carlton win (it wasn't easy but I actually made it all the way to the final siren

Telstra Dome Double Trouble

February 17th 2009 01:50
February 28th should be an interesting night in the history of sport. Both the A-league grand final and the Collingwood V Richmond NAB cup match are scheduled at the Telstra Dome. As versatile a stadium as it is I don’t think closing the roof will solve the problem.

You would think, given that it is the grand final for the A-league, it should get president. Although seeing the pitch surface presented to the Victory after the new year “Sensation” should give some insight as to the standing of the A-league in the eyes of the Telstra Dome management

Happy Valentines Vossy

February 15th 2009 12:01
The Lions took on the Saints at a sodden Carrara stadium on Valentines day and the boys from Brisvegas put out on their first date for new coach Michael Voss. Like they could ever say no to their beloved, multiple premiership captain and Brownlowe medalist, Vossy. Obviously you can only beat who the opposition put on the park but it will be interesting to see just how long the honeymoon lasts given the second string side fielded by the Saints.

Despite the loss, Saints fans can be assured that their side will be following the same philosophy in 2009 as last year in that they believe they can win games without kicking any goals. They only managed a single goal in the first half in an effort that has come to typify the Saints game plan of recent years but cam back to make the game interesting with some attacking footy in the second quarter. It begs the question why the Saints don’t just attack from the outset and not risk falling short at the line

Bush Fire Appeal Game

February 12th 2009 10:54
Hardly breaking news I know but Friday nights game between the Bombers and the Dogs has been shifted from Darwin to the Telstra Dome and is being played to raise money for the victims of the Victorian bushfires. We’ve all seen the devastation on the telly and probably, given the six degrees of separation rule, know people who have been effected by these events. Needless to say get there and dig deep.

The only insight that I can probably add to any of this is that my family survived the ash Wednesday fires in Cockatoo and I fully empathize with those who are suffering at the moment. Although I was only three and a bit years old in 1983, I still remember the day of the fires vividly. In fact I would say it is my earliest memory. It’s a traumatic experience that I will always live with and now, unfortunately, many more will too
